Sk8Mafia started as a college idea created by its founders, Dan Connelly and Peter Smolik. They needed a company for a class they were attending at the Art Institute of California in San Diego, which have won them Best Portfolio during graduation.
The small college project turned into a full-fledged skateboard brand in the early 2000s. They are popularly known in the industry as one of the go-to brands and producers of skateboard wheels, decks, apparel and accessories.
However, the Sk8Mafia crew is also known for creating a steady stream of Saturday and Monthly videos featuring their team riders showcasing their shredding skills which helped revived technical skating in early 2000s. They released the Way of Life (2004) featuring early shredders John Rosenkranz and Ryan Zammit, The Sk8Mafia AM Video (2009) and The Sk8Mafia Video (2011). They have also released yearly 'Best of...' compilation videos and full-lengths such as the crazy Stee video (2013) which was in collaboration with Swedish company Sweet Skateboards.
The Sk8Mafia team riders currently include Kellen James, Jimmy Cao, Brandon Turner, Jamie Palmore, Javier Sarmiento, Wes Kremer, Tyler Surrey, Marshall Heath, Larelle Gray, Alexis Ramirez and Stephen Lawyer. They travel and skate in many parts of the world, showcasing their talents and their sponsor's products.
The brand almost went out of business twice during the course of their operation under Blitz Distribution. Blitz tried to pull the plug on the company, but founder Dan Connelly and his crew were able to find a way to keep their partnership with the distribution company. When it was apparent that Blitz was going bankrupt, Dan and his people organised a buyout which resulted to Sk8Mafia's independence.
Many skate brands have come and gone, but there are always those that stay for decades and continuously releasing cool and exciting products - Sk8Mafia is one of them.
