Humble Beginnings
Oakley was founded in 1975 by James Jannard in his garage with only $300 in preliminary investment. James derived the name of his company from the first name of his English Setter 'Oakley Anne'.
James started selling motorcycle grips which he called 'The Oakley Grip' out of his car's trunk at motocross events. These were quite different from other grips available on the market during that time. The same material is still used in making ear socks and nose pieces on Oakley sunglasses, as well as bands on Oakley watches. The brand went on to manufacture number plates, grips, gloves, chin and elbow guards, and goggles for the motocross and BMX communities.
A pair of goggles called the 'O-Frame' was released in 1980. The brand's logo was placed on the goggles' strap, which helped them gain more recognition and distinction all across the sports industry.
Oakley started selling ski goggles in 1983. In 1984, their sunglasses called 'Factory Pilot Eyeshades' were released. These sunglasses resembled goggles and were meant to be used in sports. In 1985, Japan-made casual style sunglasses called 'Oakley Frogskin' were released.
In the 1990's, Oakley soared by going public and raised $230 million, as well as acquiring other eyewear companies that either manufacture or have retail stores in the USA and across the globe.
In 2007, Luxottica bought Oakley for a reported $2.1 billion.
