Majority of today's most popular skate brands were born out of the garages and backyards of up and coming skaters back in the day. Probably one of the first brands that come to mind with regards to this skateboarding mentality of "do it yourself" is HUF. The company's founder, Keith Hufnagel, grew up in and skated the gritty streets of New York City in the late 1980's. It was in 1992 when he moved to San Francisco to pursue his love for skateboarding.
In the past twenty years or so, skateboarders such as Keith realised that skating is not a permanent career. Creating a small business based on skateboarding and street wear could be a worthwhile goal or at least a good backup plan.
Keith opened the first Huf store in 2002. It wasn't an exclusive skate brand or shop at the onset. Instead, the store carried other brands particularly those that cater to the streetwear market. The brand kicked off soon after the shop opened since Keith and his buddies were also making hats and printing t-shirts.
Over the years, the company evolved into an independent producer of premium footwear, apparel and skate accessories that represent the counter-cultures of its roots. Also, Huf is a retailer and wholesaler with over 200 accounts within and outside of the United States.
Currently, Huf is sponsoring a diverse team of board riders including (Pro) Keith Hufnagel, Josh Matthews, Dylan Rieder, Joey Pepper, Austyn Gillette, Brad Cromer, Tyler Bledsoe, Dan Plunkett, Peter Ramondetta, Sammy Winter, Craig Anderson, (Amateur) Matt Gottwig, Jake Anderson, Dick Rizzo, (Ambassadors) Haroshi, Hanni El Khatib, Remio, (Euro Team) Simo Makela, Steve Forstner and Rory Milanes.
Since the beginning of Huf, the core was based on skateboarding with a mix of streetwear and everything else. The retail space is just one facet of the brand which allows them to tell their story to people.
Huf became one of the many brands that have their marks into the skateboarding world and street style fashion. The two industries are a match made in heaven particularly for younger generations of fashion-forward skaters. Huf brings the best of both worlds and more, since it is a brand that also produces their own line of skate shoes and accessories that match the lifestyles of the core consumers.
The company's selection of skate shoes, apparel and accessories are directed toward today's skaters. The designs range from cool to edgy, but there is prevalence of classic appeal and diversity in order to cater to the varied demographic.
The brand's clothing line and lifestyle accessories are designed to stand out and stick with the unconventional. There's definitely a hint of rebelliousness. However, it's all part of the company's roots and they are known for pushing limits and sparking intrigue from time to time.
Huf have been collaborating with various skate brands and artists through the years. But perhaps the more noteworthy was being able to collaborate with the shoe giant, Nike, twice on a series of sneakers. Though the very first shoe collab with Nike only produced twenty four pairs, it sparked the sneaker collaboration movement and gained market share.
Over the years, Huf collaborated with other skate/shoe brands such as Vans, Reebok, Adidas, Converse, DVS, New Balance, FTP, British Millerain, and Obey.
According to Keith's ex-wife/business partner, he always wanted to create Huf's own line of shoes. They are aware of the challenges and added pressure in the manufacturing of Huf's skate shoes in-house. They try and test everything in order to produce the right kind to withstand the torturous 'wear and tear' caused by skateboarding.
