The warmest winter wetsuit typically has a thickness of 5/4mm or 6/5/4mm, with built-in hood, and is made from high-quality neoprene with thermal lining for extra warmth. Brands like Xcel, Hurley, and Volcom make some of the warmest winter wetsuits.
For winter conditions, you'll generally need a wetsuit with a thickness of at least 5/4mm. However, in extremely cold conditions, a 6/5/4mm suit might be necessary. The first number typically refers to the thickness of the torso, and the second number to the limbs.
UK winters can be quite cold, so a 4/3mm, 5/4mm or 6/5/4mm wetsuit is usually required. In addition, consider wetsuits with thermal linings and built-in hoods for added warmth.
To choose a winter wetsuit, consider the water temperature, your activity level, and your tolerance to cold. Generally, a 4/3, 5/4mm or 6/5/4mm wetsuit is appropriate for winter. Wetsuits with thermal linings and built-in hoods are also beneficial for colder conditions.
Yes, thicker wetsuits do keep you warmer. The thickness of the neoprene provides more insulation, which in turn retains more body heat.
A 3mm wetsuit is typically not warm enough for winter conditions, especially in colder climates. A 4/3, 5/4mm or 6/5/4mm wetsuit is recommended for winter.
No, you should not size up for a winter wetsuit. A wetsuit typically works by trapping a thin layer of water between your body and the suit. This water gets warmed by your body temperature and acts as insulation. If the wetsuit is too large, this warm water will be replaced by cold water more frequently, reducing its insulating properties.
A 3mm wetsuit is generally suitable for water temperatures of around 59 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 20 degrees Celsius). However, individual comfort can vary depending on activity level and personal tolerance to cold along with the quality of the wetsuit.
For water temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 degrees Fahrenheit), a thicker wetsuit of around 4/3mm is recommended, possibly with a built-in hood for extra warmth.
Without a wetsuit, water temperatures of 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius) or below can be too cold and potentially hazardous. Hypothermia can set in quickly in such conditions. Always prioritize safety when deciding to go without a wetsuit.
Wetsuits with a back-zip design are generally easier to put on and take off than chest-zip or zip-free wetsuits. However, chest-zip wetsuits often provide a better fit and more flexibility.
Even with a wetsuit, water temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) can be extremely dangerous due to the risk of hypothermia. For such cold conditions, only premium quality wetsuits with at least 5mm of thickness are typically recommended. 6/5mm wetsuits will be better suited for waters that are below 7 degrees Celsius.
Typically, nothing is worn under a wetsuit, with the exception of a swimsuit. However, in colder conditions, you might consider wearing a thin wetsuit liner or thermal rash guard for extra warmth.
It's best to hang your wetsuit up to dry after rinsing it in fresh water. Avoid folding it as this can cause creases and damage the neoprene over time. Hang the wetsuit over a washing line from its waist to prevent it from stretching out the shoulders using a clothes hanger.
Rolling your wetsuit is generally better than folding it as this helps to prevent creasing and damage to the neoprene. However, the best option is to hang it up if possible from the wetsuit's waist. If you hang it from the shoulders on a clothes hanger, you risk stretching out the shoulders, even with a wide-style hanger.
