If there's one iconic skate brand that proves to be resilient despite the ups and downs of the skateboard industry, it's Powell Peralta. The company was founded in 1978 by George Powell and Stacy Peralta. The brand is renowned for creating skateboard completes, decks and wheels, as well as soft goods and accessories.
Powell was an aerospace engineer and built homemade skateboards in the late 1950's. In 1974 his son requested that he make one for him, but the young lad complained that a smooth ride is not achievable. He found out that it was polyurethane wheels that made the other young shredders ride smoothly at the parks and streets.
This gave him renewed interest in skateboarding and started producing skateboards and wheels at home. He also fabricated and experimented with new materials such as fiberglass and aluminium for composite skateboards. Peralta was one of the test riders of the slalom boards.
After being laid off in the mid 70's, Powell and his family moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, where he started his skateboard manufacturing company. The QuickSilver ProSLalom skate deck was born and marketed through Sims. The QuickTail deck soon followed.
The legendary Bone Brigade was formed in 1979 which included skate icons Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero. The Bones Brigade and Peralta played a huge role in marketing their products by capturing live action shredding videos just within their locale. The business took off quickly and Powell Peralta became one of the leading skate brands in the industry.
The late 70's to early 80's was a dark period for the skateboarding industry and many brands - big and small - were put to the test. Powell Peralta faced sales drops and debt. The resurgence of skateboarding around 1983 brought back interest in skating at parks and the rise of stellar skateboarders gave it another nudge.
The company caught up with their backorders and held on their core values of being authentic to skateboarding experience. They also love talking with skaters at the parks and sometimes giving away t-shirts for free during competitions. They also stick with their roots and didn't compromise on quality - that is, by manufacturing boards only in Santa Barbara. Even through they tried once, they couldn't find the same quality and precision as their boards made at home.
Today, Powell Peralta is incorporated as Skate One. They never stopped making skateboards for over four decades, and have also included making wheels and bearings through the other brands they own. Remarkable artworks of Vernon Courtlandt Johnson are still prominent on their skate products. Their most recent creations are the Flight skate decks which are reinforced with carbon fibre and fibreglass, making them sturdier and lighter than traditional laminates.
If you're like many skaters who are looking for storied skate brands, Powell Peralta is a must-have brand in your collection of skateboards and accessories. Ride proud with a legendary brand every time you shred!
