The origin of DGK is what we consider as one of the most motivational ones especially for those who've had their own humble beginnings when it comes to putting up their own businesses. Skaters who have transitioned from being an amateur to pro, then to entrepreneur are quite common in the skateboarding industry. But it's their colourful backgrounds and personal stories that make them more memorable.

DGK, as a skateboarding brand, is not new in the industry. They have been around since 2002 providing graphically bold and interesting skate products - from decks to complete boards, to hardware, accessories and apparel - to the avid riders and everyone else who love skate style and appeal. All of these earned them a cult following among skateboarders and casual fans.

The brand's team riders include (pros) Stevie Williams, Josh Kalis, Wade Desarmo, Boo Johnson, Dane Vaughn, Marcus McBride, Maquise Henry, (amateurs) Kevin Scott and Dwayne Fagundes.

From Being Outsiders to a Globally Renowned Brand

DGK is a Los Angeles based brand, but had its origins in Philadelphia by pro skater Stevie Williams. It is one of the brands distributed by The Kayo Corp through his partnership with W Troy Morgan.

The brand name stands for Dirty Ghetto Kids as it embodies the early skaters who have disadvantaged backgrounds and were from various neighbourhoods in Philly. They didn't like the crew at LOVE Park with skaters such as Ricky Oyola, Matt Reason and their pals because the group didn't want photographers taking pictures of Stevie and his skate buddies. The ghetto kids would hear them utter "Don't take photos of them. They are just dirty ghetto kids". After a while, Stevie, his friend John Puca and others embraced the label and called their squad Dirty Ghetto Kids or DGK for short and soon after, took over LOVE Park.

The shift to building a brand was next, so Stevie partnered with Troy Morgan to launch a distribution company in Carlsbad, California. Being a newbie in the industry is a familiar experience, much like being an outsider at LOVE Park back in their teenage years. But this is business, so launching the brand opened up possibilities and opportunities for additional brands to launch within the scope of skateboarding. So much so, The Kayo Corp. provided support for their other labels such as Organika, Gold Wheels and Expedition.

Not Just for Skateboarders

The popularity of DGK is known amongst skateboarders and non-skating fans. Celebrities such as Justin Bieber, rapper Lil' Wayne, Leigh Anne Pinnock and various hip-hop artists have been spotted wearing and supporting the label every now and then.

The products may be geared toward skateboarders, but they do not dismiss the fact that people from all walks of life have the freedom to choose whatever they want to buy, use and wear. Besides, DGK represents positivity even in the midst of adversity and 'creating something out of nothing' has been part of their mantra which fits the brand's story since its founding.
