In 1992, the time when the skateboarding industry was looking bleak, Birdhouse Skateboards was founded. Formerly named Birdhouse Projects, the company was the brainchild of two former Powell Peralta pro skaters Tony Hawk and Per Welinder. The name Birdhouse is said to be a reference to Hawk's last name.

Initially, Welinder approached another pro skater, Lance Mountain, to be his business partner. They'll both have fifty percent of shares of this proposed skate company, but Mountain declined because he would only start a company if he's 100% owner. Later, Welinder asked Tony Hawk who gladly accepted the offer since he felt his retirement is already nearing.

Currently, the company is headquartered in Vista, California. Their team members include Tony Hawk, Aaron "Jaws" Homoki, Ben Raybourn, Clint Walker, David Loy, Lizzie Armanto, Clive Dixon, Shawn Hale and Elliot Sloan.
